The Isle of Wight Community Food Pantry was founded by Wanda Roberts after witnessing a mother and her young children living out of a car — a moment that made clear just how great the need was in our community. Moved by compassion and a belief that neighbors must look out for one another, Wanda turned that one encounter into a movement.

What began as a personal act of kindness has grown into a thriving non-profit serving hundreds of individuals and families across Isle of Wight County and surrounding communities. In October 2025, we became an official 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, ensuring every donation is fully tax-deductible. By April 2026, we proudly partnered with the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia & the Eastern Shore to expand our reach and impact.

Our compassionate beginnings

At The Isle of Wight Community Food Pantry, our journey began with deep compassion for our neighbors. We are driven by the belief that neighbors uplift neighbors, providing free food to families and individuals overcoming food insecurity in Isle of Wight and nearby communities. Our provisions come from the generous donations of the public, companies, and local farmers. In October 2025, we became a non-profit organization, ensuring that every donation is tax-deductible. By April 2026, we proudly partnered with the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia & the Eastern Shore to further strengthen our efforts in helping families fight food insecurity.

Who we help

The Isle of Wight Community Food Pantry is dedicated to supporting individuals and families experiencing food insecurity. Our services extend to low-income households, seniors, students, veterans, and those facing sudden crises like job loss or emergencies. We are committed to providing nutritious groceries to ensure these individuals receive the basic necessities they need to thrive. Our goal is to alleviate hunger and provide a helping hand when it's needed most in our community.

We serve anyone in our community who is experiencing food insecurity — no income verification required, no lengthy paperwork. Our neighbors include:

- Low-income individuals and families
- Senior citizens on fixed incomes
- Veterans
- Students and college-aged young adults
- Families facing sudden hardship such as job loss, medical emergencies, or natural disasters

We believe that access to food is a basic human right, and we are here to help — with dignity, respect, and no barriers.

Our unique commitment to children

One of the unique services we proudly offer is our program for local elementary schools, aimed at eliminating hunger in school-aged children in Isle of Wight County. We understand the challenges families face, especially towards the end of the month when parents are awaiting their monthly resources. To address this, we provide food for the children's weekends, ensuring they have nutritious meals even when school is out. This initiative helps bridge the gap and provides consistent nourishment for our youngest community members.

One of our most meaningful programs serves elementary school children right here in Isle of Wight County. We know that many families face the most difficult days at the end of the month, when resources run thin and the weekend means no school lunch.

Through our weekend food program, we provide nutritious meals and snacks for children to take home on Fridays — so that a school break never means going hungry. Ensuring our youngest neighbors are nourished and ready to learn is one of our greatest privileges.

"The Isle of Wight Community Food Pantry restored my hope during a difficult time. Their kindness and support truly made a difference for my family."
